„Humans have one heart. Question?“ Rocky stomped one of his back legs twice.
„Yes, Rocky, humans have one heart.“ I answered. We had gone over the basic anatomy of our respective species weeks ago.
„What mean when human one heart sound like two hearts. Question?“
I frowned and slowly put down the chain. „I- what do you mean?“ My right hand automatically moved to the wrist of my left, measuring my pulse. It was a little elevated, but otherwise nothing out of the ordinary.
„Grace sound like two hearts. There.“ He pointed towards my abdomen.
„No, no, Rocky, my heart is here.“ I pointed to the middle of my chest, slightly to the left.
„Yes, one. Two there.“ He kept pointing at my abdomen.- - -

Of course he was safe here -- or as safe as an untrained astronaut could be on a jury-rigged ship rocketing through deep space on a mission he only half understood with his alien best friend, anyway. But there had been a time…
He wasn’t ready to say it out loud. Not yet. Maybe not ever. But part of him was sure he’d experienced… something. Something worse than being held down, sedated, and then forced into a suicide mission. Something really bad. Something unspeakable.
