Jon put the cigarette to his lips when Elias flicked it open. Elias lit the cigarette. Jon took a pull from it, coaxing the flame alive. He expected Elias to drop his hand once the cigarette had been lit, but instead it drifted over to his cheek, brushing against it like the man wanted to cradle his face. Jon unthinkingly leaned in.

“They’d think I’m one lucky bloke. And I bet it’s on someone’s Timothy Stoker bingo card this year.” Tim laughed, but when he realized Jon wasn’t laughing too, he immediately sat up from his relaxed slouch. Fuck, he definitely said something he shouldn’t have, hadn’t he?
Jon was staring at his beer, a deep flush forming across his cheeks. “There’s a bingo card?”

Elias is a vindictive asshole, Jon is self-sacrificing, and Martin is really trying his best.

Martin had thought isolating himself from the rest of the world and reading horrible statements about the end of humanity was the worst his job as Peter's assistant could throw at him. It turned out he was very, very wrong.
