AU of the original series: One where Magical Girls don't turn into Witches when they are filled with despair, instead the Witches manifest as independent beings. Because of this, Kyubey develops a interest in preserving the girls' lives, if only to farm them for more Witches. But he also has to keep their emotional states stable, if only to keep from being overwhelmed by all the extra Witches.
The sum result is a Messenger of Magic that Genuinely watches the Girls' backs, and who tries to maximize the positive effects of each wish granted. It's not enough to free the Girls from all trauma and pain, but it's enough to preserve their families and keep their friendships stable. The rest is up to them.
