    Summary

The pain has become too much for Ilya Rozanov to carry. For years, he’s lived with grief that never really healed, loneliness that followed him from Russia to Boston to Ottawa, and the constant exhaustion of pretending he’s okay when he hasn’t been in a very long time. Hockey gave him purpose. Shane Hollander gave him love. But neither could silence the ache left behind by losing his mother or the growing belief that maybe it was time to see her again.

So one morning, after one too many days suffering in silence, Ilya decides he’s done fighting. He leaves behind a letter for Shane, swallows a bottle of pills, and waits for the pain to end. Unfortunately for him, he is loved far too deeply for the universe to let him go that easily.

When the Hollanders find him in time, Ilya is forced into something he never planned for: surviving. And surviving means psychiatric holds, therapy sessions, difficult conversations, and learning how to let people care for him without believing he’s a burden. Most terrifying of all, it means letting Shane see every ugly, broken piece of him he tried so desperately to hide.

Or: Ilya Rozanov attempts suicide, but the Hollanders love him too much to let him go quietly.

    Summary

As soon as Ilya realizes that he has to kill himself, his brain immediately latches onto one indisputable fact: someone is going to have to find his body. There is no way around that, but not even the premature guilt for whoever has the unpleasant task is enough to talk him out of it, anymore.

If he hadn’t ghosted Galina, she’d probably tell him that he cares so much about it because of his own experience finding his mother. She’d also probably tell him that the fact that losing Shane Hollander is enough to make him kill himself means that he’s got a long, nonoptional date with a padded room clogging up his calendar for the foreseeable future. She already has a lot of fucking opinions about Shane and their fucked up situation, and Ilya really is fucking sick of hearing about it because he will not let her ruin the one good fucking thing he has.

    Had.

    Summary

Ilya’s head snaps back, his back arching up and away from the ice. He’s convulsing, a choking sound escaping his throat. Strong arms pull Shane away as the medical team descends.

He fights the hands on him. “Stop it,” Shane demands. He identifies Bood as his captor. “Bood, let me go. I mean it, let me go. I’ll stay out of the way.”

“No, you won’t.” Bood tightens his grip. “Just give them a second to work. Roz needs them working on them more than he needs you blocking their way. You can see fine from here.”

But Bood doesn’t understand. If Ilya is aware, if he can hear and feel and see everything happening around him, there is nothing and no one truly familiar.

Or, Ilya gets his bell rung

    Summary

Shane Hollander has spent years watching Ilya Rozanov take care of everyone in the room except himself. He loves him for it. He's also, if he's being honest, desperately curious what Ilya looks like when someone takes that from him completely.

Their friends Scott and Kip are spending two weeks at Shane's Ottawa cottage for the off-season. It's warm, it's easy, and somewhere between the dock and the dinner table, Shane and Kip have a conversation that changes the shape of the whole summer.

Scott Hunter. Who is, according to Ilya, attractive in a very boring, reliable way. Like a golden retriever. Not interesting. Not interesting at all.

    Summary

Ilya wondered if his heart was still beating in his chest. Ilya spoke words to Galina that did not resonate with him. He spewed bullshit and half lies and assured, “No, no thoughts for a while. They’ve been going away,” even though they were the only thing that echoed through his mind with each beat of his pulse. Ilya was dying. Slowly. With every breath. Either that, or going insane. Probably, most likely, insane. But above all, Ilya was lonely, and could not take the silence anymore.

Ilya, 3:52 PM: This is the worst thing you have ever done to me, Shane Hollander.

He felt so pathetic. Begging on his hands and knees for love. He wondered what he had done in a past life to constantly be pleading to god for any kind of love.

Ilya Rozanov sustained a bad injury late last season that he just can't seem to shake. He feels himself start to slowly unravel, unable to face the fact that the one thing he has always been able to hold on to may not be his at all anymore. As his performance declines, his mental health begins to take a tumble with it.

Set after the long game, where Ilya needs therapy, is in denial, and at war with himself.
