Summary
Trust value is a very fickle thing, that much Lin Ling already knows. It is especially so in the world of heroes. Even the slightest snowball thrown can have a ripple effect that can either be catastrophic or ideal for said hero. Still, he can't say he wasn't even a little bit alarmed when he woke up to a whole moving crew hauling the giant statue of the previous Nice—with tomatoes still on its face—into a platform.

AKA a fic inspired by the poll currently being held of the TBHX characters where X and Nice are constantly fighting for top spot. The last place Xiao will ever think of being comfortable is the misty mountains of dragonspine, stuck in a caved-in hollow with the mortal who threatened to drown the entirety of the nation he was bound to protect. But there is warmth, here, next to each other, with their hands intertwined, the peril and danger seemingly vanishing in the moment.
"Say...why did you agree to take this commission? When we saw the given testimonies, it was more than likely he was gone."
"Mortal lives are...fragile."Xiao murmurs, eyes drifting off to the faint memory of a dream. It's a family of five. Of a mother and father with bright ginger hair, and a boy who's eyes shone brighter than noctilucous jade.
"So...I have to protect them. So children can realize their dreams."

Summary
Xiao stills as a thought comes to him. He observes the crystal fly. It's golden wings elegantly fluttering, leaving behind a trail of geo energy looking like golden dust. It reminds him of golden braided hair that would flutter around whenever that person walked, and the soft smile they gave him every chance they met.
Xiao feels his heart skip a beat for a moment, thinking how well it would fit the traveller, and snatches the crystal fly without a second thought.

Before his servitude to the Goddess that chained him, he was but a spirit that wandered through the starry ether, visiting the dreams of children and looking over Liyue in his own, little way. Long as he was around, the mortals dared to dream without fear. Far from the nightmares that tainted their innocence. Children lived, the adults fell in love. There was life.
Because he was a guardian of dreams. A guardian of hope.

It's been months since Aether left for Inazuma. And in that duration,Xiao had neglected his health,failing to take his medicine as he carried on his job,the corruption seeping into his body festering more. Seeing the state the other was in upon returning,Aether isn't happy one bit.

Xiao shudders at the way Aether eyes him but he isn't scared, instead, there's a sudden pool of warmth in his stomach and a fluttering feeling that he does not quite understand.
He wants to say something,but his throat suddenly feels so dry and his eyelids start to droop. His vision hazes as warmth envelops his body,and even when his mind blazes in alarm, his body feels too soft,too relaxed to take action.
"Ngh."
Xiao slumps over with a grown. Aether catches him,laying the other against his body. There's a low chuckle coming from the other and Xiao never realized just how much he missed Aether's voice and scent till now.
It's a dangerous position to be in. Right now. But it's Aether. . .
The blonde leans in,voice low and husky against his ear."It's time for your purification,Xiao."
He'd give the other anything. Everything.

Their screams and cries always seemed to echo in his head,filling his mind with thoughts of evil that never had been his,of the wrath of bygone gods long gone and the innocent wishful mortal dreams.
It was painful. So painful.
Tartaglia took that pain away. Xiao found, with him by his side,the voices seemed just a lot more tolerable...
And then there were also those moments where they shut up completely.
