Summary
After narrowly surviving what should have been a routine mission, Sage endures a painful recovery in the care of Reyna and Neon. She returns to the front lines, fully-recovered, but finds inadequacies in her current abilities. Reyna takes her under her wing, helps her unlock new abilities, and teaches her hard lessons. At first, Sage hesitates, but Reyna forces her to question her beliefs and address the underlying problems. She let her arm flop out beside her, fingers brushing the edge of the mattress. “It’s loud,” she muttered. Not accusatory. Just a shade too tired. Honest. “In here.” She tapped the side of her temple with a knuckle. “Thought maybe if you kept looking, it’d drown it out.”
There was a pause, too long, the room going quiet like the words had knocked something so loose inside him that he couldn’t make his lungs work. Ekko sat back a little in the chair, like he wasn’t sure whether to move closer or bolt.
“Not really how that works,” he said finally. Quiet, but not unkind.
“I know.” Her voice cracked just a little. She closed her eyes. “Still.”
