Ice is rehearsing it all in his head as he makes his way to the kitchen—It's not my choice. I have orders. I didn't ask to do it. I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry—but he stops in his tracks when he passes the threshold. Maverick is standing in the middle of the kitchen, facing the sliding glass door that looks out towards the beach. He's leaning heavily on his cane, dressed in his blues, two stars on each shoulder board.
And it's not just the uniform that throws Ice off. Aside from the cane, Maverick is standing with his back perfectly straight, feet shoulder-width apart. Perfect parade rest, so still that he rivals a statue.
Oh, Ice thinks, he knows.

Summary
Ice hates waiting rooms. The lingering smell of antiseptic and the stink of anxiety make him nauseous if he takes too deep a breath.
It's worse when they won't tell him anything. "You aren't family," the nurse had said, not unkindly, but firmly all the same. It makes him want to rip his hair out, but this isn't a military hospital, and he can't pull rank or the 'he's my wingman' excuse. Not that it would be an excuse, but it's the closest to the truth that he can publicly get.
So all he can do is sit here and wait for Carole to arrive, hoping all the while that Pete is resting and not laying awake, alone in a hospital bed.

Summary
Blowing 100 dollars to see a band that she didn't even know of was pretty stupid, even by Maverick's standards.
But she did.
And she did it for Ice
She does that quite often. Silly, impulsive, rash decisions that cost Maverick her dignity, her cash, her suave persona, all for the glimpse of Ice's smile, hopefully at her. Whether it be indulgent or fond or mischievous. They were all beautiful to Maverick. And she would do the dumbest things to see a hint of them.
In other words, Maverick was whipped for Ice.
