He was sitting in the last bench. But not the benches in front of the altar, the ones behind it. He was sitting alone. In front of him the choir and some other people sat, waiting for the next choral to be sung. Up front behind the altar was his father preaching about something he didn’t really care about today. Normally he would listen to everything his father would say up there in front of the commune, but not today. Today he was transfixed on the person in one of the last rows on the other side of the church. They were clothed in a short skirt with fishnet tights underneath, a long sleeved crop top and plateau boots. He could see two little pink cat ears peak from a small handback they held in front of their chest. The two of them had arranged to leave after the first prayer ended, which it did right now, but he didn’t want to go before his “friend”. They called the shots. They always did.
