Summary
Hermione Granger disappeared at the end of her seventh year shocking the entire school. It capped what was an extremely odd seven years at Hogwarts. Flash forward fifteen years and the class who graduated in 1998 is reconvening at their alma mater. Many of those attending wondered if Hermione would return for it since it seemed as if no one had heard from her since her departure. Her appearance moments before the reunion was to begin reminds many individuals what the world was like in the late 1990s and how it could have been much worse for everyone.
As Hermione arrives, she remembers the last two years of her time at the old school in a series of flashbacks triggered by various things and people she sees.

Tommy wipes his palms against the side of his jeans and squeezes through the crowd, never once taking his eyes off of Steve as he makes a beeline right for him.
He’s a couple feet away, gearing up to call out his greeting when someone else beats him to it and sidles up to Steve. They touch Steve, putting their palm low on his waist, half tucked up under his blazer. It’s an intimate touch, an almost possessive one in a very casual sort of way.
Tommy freezes in his tracks.
Steve perks up in the presence of his new company, back straightening and body turning into theirs — receptive, familiar.
He tilts his head, just enough that Tommy can see the smile gracing his lips, the softness in his eyes, and the other person dips their own chin, leaning in to whisper something into Steve’s ear. Their curtain of hair sways forward, brushing against Steve’s collar, and Steve reaches up to tuck it behind their ear, giving Tommy a clear view of—

Eddie lets him approach, this time. Lets him curl his fingers in the hem of Eddie’s shirt.
“Sorry, I know I probably sound crazy, I just––” he pulls it up, stares at Eddie’s side, and then lets out a hysterical little noise that sounds like a cross between a laugh and a sob.
“You’re ok,” Steve says.
His fingers are hot on Eddie’s skin, pressed light and shockingly reverent to the space between his hip and rib cage.
“You’re ok,” he repeats. It sounds like he’s trying to convince himself.
“Hey,” Eddie says. It comes out more breathless than he’d prefer but Steve fucking Harrington has him backed against a wall in a bathroom with his hands up Eddie’s shirt so he thinks a little lack of air is warranted. “Are you ok?”

I’ve got you, haven’t I? I would be happy living with you for the rest of my life, I guess. I don’t know.” He looks unfairly pretty in his cheap suit and the ugly overhead lights against the grey felt of her cubicle wall. “Probably sounds crazy,” he says, “sorry.”
“You should marry me for real,” she says, four years after they decided they were getting out. She should have known, even then, that they weren’t deciding to get out, they were deciding to choose each other over anything else.
