Gongsun Yin loosened the outer layer of his cloak and was halfway toward his usual seat somewhere in the middle-back when he noticed the unfamiliar figure sitting alone near the western windows – the reason half the academy had been whispering for days.
(Or, perhaps not unfamiliar, just new – although nearly everyone already knew who he truly was.)
Xie Zheng.
The Chancellor’s nephew. The sole heir of the noble Xie family.
The boy who had supposedly begun accompanying military forces before most students here had even touched a sword.
The boy everyone whispered about.
Gongsun Yin had heard enough stories over the past three days to fill up three entire volumes, each less reliable than the last.
One claimed Xie Zheng had killed a mounted bandit at twelve. Another insisted he slept with a dagger beneath his pillow even within the Chancellor’s residence. Someone else swore he heard that he had once ridden three days through a storm carrying crucial military intelligence after an ambush slaughtered the original messengers.
Gongsun Yin suspected at least half of the stories were nonsense.
(He didn’t know what to think of the remaining half.)

Summary
This is going to be a crossover AU between The Double/The Marriage of Di Daughter and The Pursuit of Jade/Chasing Jade. I will be making some changes to make this work, obviously, but the basic idea is that Ji Heng and Xie Zheng as cousins getting their revenge together and falling in love in the process. This will probably become a collection because I want to explore their childhood a bit as well.
Most of my research is from Wikipedia, ChinaKnowledge.de and various reddit or Tumblr posts I've come across by googling things. I was going to make a reference document on here but decided against. Feel free to (gently) correct anything egregiously wrong in the comments and I'll either cite my sources, explain my reasoning, or correct myself depending on the situation. Enjoy!
