She tightens her throbbing hands over her backpack straps and tries to convince herself to start walking. She’ll follow the stream for a while as long as it bends more or less east. This way she at least knows she has an emergency water supply if she gets overheated. I’m okay. She floods her body with fresh air and lets it out slowly, readying herself to take the first step. I’m okay.
The ghost boy next to her says, “I wasn’t going to say anything, but seriously, you are really bad at directions.”

“Well, it’d be like anything without a heart! Dead inside, cruel, mean, unfeeling,” Ranpo prattled on. “Now, suppose this monster is given a heart. He’s able to feel now, sympathize, care even. It’s brought warmth to his cold existence. Do you think that monster would be happy if someone came and took that away from him?”

Best of the best short story even without Dazai or Chuuya making an actual appearance. Well done!!
