Uhtred knew they were coming seconds before they descended on them from the tree lines.
Cold dread seized his heart, a full-grown panic that made him dizzy. This was an impossible position to defend, he knew it. He grabbed for the handle of his weapon and, for a fraction of a heartbeat, looked at Alfred, who was looking back at him with wide eyes, pale and fragile, clearly unprepared. Uhtred drew his sword.
“TO YOUR WEAPONS!” he shouted from the depth of his chest. “DEFEND THE KING WITH YOUR LIVES!”

After a lifetime of service at Holybourne Hall, Alfred had been eager to ignore his new employer's demands to take a few days to rest, something absolutely unacceptable as the mansion was facing some serious recruitment issues that could never bear his departure. But after receiving a letter from his old first footman, Uhtred, perhaps the holiday could actually be fruitful, and an agreement between himself and his greatest failure could be achieved, despite all dire circumstances.

Summary
The first time she had done it it had been like something out of a dream, some out of body experience where she could see herself going through the motions but it wasn’t her controlling them. It had been done out of a quiet rage and pain that could not be expressed in any other way.
No one suspected a thing. Alfred was a sickly man, therefore any bouts of sickness were not seen as unusual and not something to be looked deeply into.
