“Why am I begging to come if I know you won’t let me? I want to be good for you, I don’t want to ask to come when I know I’m not allowed.” Shane tries to explain the way his brain is working. Ilya nods at him in understanding.
“Because I like to see you beg, Shane. The way you can be good for me is by doing what I tell you, yes? So if I tell you to beg even when you know I won’t let you, you beg. And you never know, maybe if you beg very very well, I will let you.” Ilya shrugs and leaves no room for argument, and Shane understands now.

“We should be what?” Ilya laughs. “Braiding each other’s hair like girls, yes?”
“No. I just don’t think we need to be so hostile.
“I don’t like you,” Ilya says plainly. “You are irritating, and you are boring. In two years, we will be done with hockey and college, and neither of us will have existed to each other. Let it be that.”

Summary
Rose volunteers for a nonprofit that rescues sex-trafficked omegas, and Shane thinks it's a great cause. He even attends their fundraising galas.
Then, one night, Rose calls to ask for a favor: She wants Shane to let a recently-rescued male omega live with him. In his apartment.
His name is Ilya, Rose explains, and the thing is, despite omega hormone levels, he acts and smells just like an alpha. He can't keep staying in an omega group home because he's scaring the other omegas and endangering the staff.
But he could live with Shane, Rose insists. "You're a big strong alpha hockey player, so he can't intimidate you physically. But also he needs to feel safe, which he can with you, because you're not like other alphas." She pauses. "You know?"
By which she means Shane has never had a full rut, his scent glands barely work, he can't form a knot, and he has no interest in sticking his dick in anyone. Which, whatever. It's fine.
But if being a failure as an alpha means he can help this omega, Ilya, who's apparently as much of a biological anomaly as Shane is…
Shane says yes.
And maybe it's a stupid decision. But he knows that it's also the right one.
