Summary
Life has occasioned to kick Jack Abbot in the teeth more times than he can count. More times than he has fingers, more times than the five toes he lost or the five toes he still has. He keeps this in mind when Samira Mohan emails him asking permission to submit the article they co-authored two summers ago, Efficacy and Complications of Intracardiac Pigtail Catheterization in the Emergency Room Setting, to present at a conference in Philadelphia.
He has not seen her for almost two years. It took six months for him to get her new phone number, and another six months after that to convince her that he really meant it when he said that he wanted to keep in touch.

Summary
Samira calls Jack on the nights she can’t sleep. He’s awake— he’s always awake. Answering on the second ring, "Hey there, Dr. Mohan," a rumble of gravel, so warm that she can feel his smile leaking through the phone.
or, the one where Samira falls slowly.

Summary
“Look at him, Samira,” Jack says. The words seem lodged in his throat. He's forcing them out. “Sweetheart fucking face. And they were gonna kill him.”
He kisses the dog on the top of its head. And Samira usually finds that sort of behavior foreign and disgusting, but she puddles just a little more when she sees Jack Abbot do it.
“So you took a chance on him?” she says.
“What can I say?” Jack lifts the tags on his dog’s collar with a crook of his finger. Samira watches as they slide, metal on metal, identifying information, dents and dings—and she sees it, she aches as she sees it, that scrape of metal limbs and dog tags in gray matter memories. “I'm a sucker for lost fucking causes.”

Jack rescues a tripod dog with a history of violence. Samira learns what they each have in common.

Summary
She eyes the prickly hair on her shins that’s just growing back in, trying to decide if it’s visible. Unfortunately, it most definitely is, and she lets out an annoyed noise as she gracelessly toes off her shoes again, a bit more violently than she might if she wasn’t as frustrated. Because there goes the outfit she chose. A yellow sundress that falls down to just above her knees is not exactly known for covering up her legs, after all.
This is what she gets for falling asleep mid-case study.

Summary
With PTMC short-staffed, Jack has worked himself to the bone. Samira tests a theory that she can get Jack to take care of himself if he thinks he's taking care of her.
--
They eat with the faint murmur of the ED as a soundtrack. She pulls apart small pieces of her egg and cheese english muffin. Abbot wolfs down the burrito and studies the remains of the wrapper, as though his own hunger has surprised him.
Her lips twitch with sympathetic amusement. How oblivious he’s been to his own needs. There’s a strange delight too, in finding Ellis was right. He’ll listen to her. He’ll give in, if it’s her. The thrill down her spine is electric. She wants to know how far she can push this. Exactly how close she can get before he says no or sees through her. How good would he be to himself if she asked it of him? Will he let her love him in this transitive way? Care for yourself because you care about me and I care about you.
Well. Samira Mohan is nothing if not data-driven.
