Blue-eyes across the street was an innocent. What he was doing biking through this part of town this late at night, Driver couldn't know, but the look on his face made it clear that he had never been party to this kind of violence before. Not so close, anyway, not within screaming distance. He was scrawny, taller than Driver but easily subduable. And he was trembling.
In other words, he wasn't the kind of man that deserved what was coming to him. Most likely he deserved the opposite.
Or: Driver commits a crime, and Grace is the only witness. Driver gives chase.

“I’m his ride,” I tell her firmly, unmoving from my position between Grace and the woman before me. “We have a date, and I’d prefer that he not miss it.”
She looks me up and down in a similar fashion to how a wolf would study a livestock guard dog. She is silently testing my limits, assessing how far she can push before she will have to back off. The look in her eyes indicates that she knows that I know this.
Grace, who has stood stock still during this entire exchange, attempts to speak up.
“If I may-”
“Sir, this matter takes priority over the personal lives of anyone involved. It is imperative that Dr. Grace comes with me.”
“It’s imperative that you find someone else. Dr. Grace knows better than to get into cars with strangers.”

He had never expected to fall in love again.
The wound on his stomach aches at the thought of Irene, Standard and Benicio—he had failed them. He couldn't fail again.
Featherlight touches of fingertips over the scar brings him out of his daze, blinking away the unshed tears that gather on his lashes.
Ryland stares up at him, his gaze soft and filled with concern. “Hey,” his lips curl.
“Hey yourself,” Casey echoes.
“You doing okay?” Ryland brushes his thumb over the scar once more.
Casey breathes out unevenly, nodding down at his light. “Perfect.”
Or, Casey gets to try again.
