    Summary

It wasn’t that what they did together never varied: it did, always, and that was part of what made it - exciting, he supposed was the word. Bearable, he occasionally thought. Desirable, at least sometimes. But things had changed so much between them since those first frightened times together - good God, was it really more than ten years ago? It wasn’t what it had once been, at any rate: in many ways, now, he didn’t know what it was.

An epilogue to The Lorrington Airlift, and taking up directly where that story ends: Bertie and Gimlet and a first, rather clumsy, post-war attempt to work out just what it might be now. Rated Goblin Brain for self-indulgent fluff and smut.

Kintsugi: The Japanese art of repairing broken pottery by meticulously joining pieces back together and filling cracks with lacquer dusted with powdered gold, silver, or platinum, thereby highlighting the flaws in the mended object. (Oxford English Dictionary.)

A short coda to 'Abide With Me', set approximately two months after the end of that story; published under the Goblin Brain imprint for pure self-indulgence. Bertie gets a hug, at last.

    Summary

“I can do with a rest, if only to sit and look at the sky. I don’t mind telling you that there was a time when I wondered if I should ever see it again.”
    - from W.E. Johns 'Gimlet Gets The Answer'.

A missing scene from 'Gimlet Gets The Answer', wherein Cub and Gimlet attempt some approximation to life-affirming groping but they're both pretty wretched at it really. I have so many conflicting ideas about how this scenario might go down, but here's one of them.

    Summary

“Why doesn’t she change?” Bertie cried, his eyes riveted to the struggle above their heads. “If she falls from that height - “

He felt the change through his leg, where Towser had been pressing so close that Bertie could hardly have moved without tripping on him: the sudden shifting as the comforting weight of the dog twisted and lengthened. Then the scrabbling of claws up his leg, the squirrel dashing up and around him as neatly as up a tree trunk, up to his shoulder -

“Because she can’t,” Towser snapped, and in an explosion of whirring wings and a flash of green and brown he leapt from Bertie’s shoulder into the air.

If public schools in the early 20th century were hell, then surely public schools with daemons would be even worse. A self-indulgent remix of my own school-set Bertie & Gimlet fic 'Burning Bridges', but set approximately within dotsayers' Biggles Daemons AU. (Published under the goblin brain imprint not for the usual reason (filth) but for nonsense and pure self-indulgence.)

    Summary

'There were so many times— in the darkness of night, in an operation, catching an enemy by surprise— the way you’d looked because of that fox would flash before my eyes— and I still killed them, of course, but— but I gave them a clean death, Bertie, the way you would have wanted me to. The way you would have done for me.'
    - ysande, 'Thesis, Antithesis'.

Inspired by lines in ysande's wonderful 'Thesis, Antithesis' which really didn't require any further elaboration, but my brain refused to stop thinking about them. Gimlet and Bertie and the fox.
WARNINGS for fox-hunting, animal suffering and animal death, though not explicitly described.

    Summary

“I hope you’ve packed your winter woolies,” Biggles called from the breakfast table as Bertie dropped his kit-bag in the doorway, ready for the off.

“Well - within reason,” said Bertie. “Why, is your left shoulderblade aching?”

Slightly more scientific than that,” said Biggles, dryly. “The seaweed on the Air Ministry roof seems to have been damper than usual yesterday - they’re cautiously prophesying it’s going to be chilly for a couple of days.

    Summary

“A year,” she said at the end, when the sky outside had dimmed almost to darkness and they sat illuminated by the glow of the fire like a pair of conspirators. “Give us a year to change your mind - or, no, let’s do this in the proper form. A year and a day. Christmas Day next year. Will you promise me that you won’t vanish before then?”

Erich, Marie and Biggles prepare for Christmas.

    Summary

"Really, I think I ought to see him. It’s the first time I’ve had him down to Chedcombe in an age, and it’s been in the diary for weeks. And in any case - “ Bertie drew the zip across the top of the bag, his fingers fumbling a little, muffled by the bandages. “At least Chedcombe’s big enough that I won’t disturb him if I start shouting my head off in the middle of the night.”

    It's 1960, of course you can't just tell someone there's a problem. (Bertie & Gimlet, post-'Forms a Syndicate'.)

“You’ll be telling us next that you’ve seen a ghost,” said Algy.

“Of course I have, old thing,” said Bertie with a small shrug. “Only surprised that you haven’t.”

“And are you the ghost of Christmas past, come to chide me for my mistakes?”

“Or of Christmas present, perhaps,” said Marie. “Come to encourage you to make some more.”

“But - all this business about - what did you call them?”

“Parallel realities,” said Raymond, imperturbably, and Biggles pulled a face.

“It doesn’t sound terribly sane either, does it?”

“Not in the least,” said Raymond. “But unfortunately it’s the best explanation we’ve yet managed to come up with.”

    Summary

If Biggles had ever thought about it - which he hadn't - he'd have thought that the service would be at one of the big London churches, somewhere in Westminster, and it would be packed full of men in impeccably tailored suits with tightly furled umbrellas who would drift away at the end of the service without speaking a word to the rest of them. He didn't know much of what Gimlet King had spent his life doing, but he knew it had mattered enough for that.

He wouldn't have expected this: this quiet, green place, with its quiet grey church that seemed to have come adrift from its hamlet some time centuries back, and now lay lapped in woodland; a small, overlooked place, and still only half full. But then, there’d been nothing expected about any of this.

Two months ago, Gimlet King died far from home. This is what happened afterwards.

    Summary

“You came to ask whether you could borrow one of my pilots,” said Mullen. “Or, if we’re really going to get down to brass tacks, you came to ask if you could borrow Captain Bigglesworth. Of course, this interview is more in the nature of a discussion between gentlemen than an official matter. I know you don’t go in much for official matters, in your line of work. You don't need to ask my permission. So - entirely unofficially, of course - I would like to tell you to go jump.”

Major Mullen and Colonel Raymond come to something that approximates to an understanding.

    Summary

“I never knew such a bunch of stiffs in my life! Busy doing what, I ask you? They can't all be busy at once - “ His eyes narrowed. “Here - you said you were busy too.”

“I am!” Algy protested. “Or will be shortly, anyway.”

    “Busy doing what?”

Algy couldn't quite help the guilty expression that flitted across his face. “Well - “

“I knew it!” said Biggles, furiously. “You’re all busy doing the same thing! Without me! I’ve seen rattlesnakes with a greater sense of personal loyalty than you lot. You've been getting together on the sly and not telling me about it! On purpose! When you knew I was usually busy so wouldn’t notice! Of all the treacherous, miserable, back-stabbing - “

“Look here, it wasn't that we didn't want to invite you!” said Algy hotly. “We just knew you wouldn't fancy joining in!”

Biggles joins in (with the regularly scheduled 266 squadron orgy.) Absolutely shameless PWP, if you're not here for the barely in-character filth then it's probably better not to be here at all.

“You think you can crack the safe?”

“I’m confident I can, given enough time.”

“But we’ll be here all night, surely!” said Tubby, appalled.

“Very probably,” said Steeley, his voice showing a touch of impatience. “But we certainly won’t get away any quicker if we stand here arguing about it. Now do pipe down and let me get on.”

Tubby entertains himself as best he can while Steeley cracks a safe. More hand appreciation than even W.E. Johns could shake a stick at.

    Summary

‘Relaxed’, Bertie thought, was not an adjective that one could usually apply to Gimlet King. There was a tension in him, as precisely controlled as a watch-spring, that drove him on relentlessly. But if there was ever a time when that spring would have to run down a little or risk snapping under the strain, then it would be the night after the end of Finals.

Bertie and Gimlet and a relaxed summer evening at the end of university (with a little tipsy fumbling.) Fluff, fluff, self-indulgent fluff.
