As your travels ensue, love and money troubles seem to make this banal task into one that Dunk is not sure he can ever forget.

Along with the implementation of TAP, the RDA also formed another organization, one that involved human children working alongside the na'vi children.
You were unfortunate enough to be chosen as one of them. Not a child, but still a child in their eyes. While you thought of it as misfortune, to your family? It was an opportunity. They put to use what connections they had and then forced you into a job you didn't want.
It wasn't enough that you were being forced to toil in the military in your youth as punishment for your "rebellious nature", they had to sign you up to the RDA as well, keen on sowing the seeds of your efforts.
Unable to say no (not that you had a choice), you went. And spent the rest of you adolescence trapped in this hellhole.
You realize, soon enough, maybe it wasn't all bad. You found something else to care about. Something else to live for. But you will not be abandoned again. Not if you can help it.
