He didn’t seem put off by it. If anything, he looked mildly entertained.
“That’s fair,” he said. “But then I suppose I’m still a stranger whether I know your name or not.”
He tapped the bar lightly once from where he was sitting, as if considering something. “Though I’d argue I’m not exactly invading. You did choose to sit next to me. I’m still on my side of the bar.”
Smartass, she thought. She decided to give him a taste of his own medicine.
“I chose a stool,” she corrected immediately. “You were already part of the furniture.”
That earned a laugh from him.
“Part of the furniture,” he repeated. “That’s a new low for me.”A night out. A hero. A woman trying very hard not to fall apart.
Maria wasn’t supposed to be seen. Hawks wasn’t supposed to care. But one drunken conversation in a nightclub turns into something far more complicated than either of them intended.
