Summary
Red on white.
A striking colour combination reminiscent of the red and white gingham picnic blanket I carried through hay fields in the summer, the heat blaring down on my shoulders. My father led the way. My mother at his side. My little sister, Lara, holding my hand.
Red and white, like the flowers growing on mother’s bedroom windowsill that persevered much farther into the cold months of autumn than I thought possible, before one by one, the petals began to fall.
Red and white like the stinging cold biting the white skin of my cheeks, the flush of effort rising up my neck as I gasped through the winter air. My vision blurs, fading in and out. The cabin is in sight. Mother and Lara are waiting. Only a little farther.
Red and white, like paint spilled on a blank canvas. Like blood spilled in fresh fallen snow.
Red and white was all I could see, burnt into my mind, behind my eyes as I struggled to hold them open.All colour faded away, save for red and white, the day I found my father’s corpse in the forest.

Summary
