Michael Carter believed he had a handle on the situation. Yes, he had gone and been stupid enough as to fall in love with one of the worst men he possibly could have... but he didn't have to deal with it. He just needed to keep up the charade of Lex Luthor's vapid, empty-minded arm candy. He just needed to keep himself compartmentalized, unbothered, and available.
Michael Carter was proven to be very wrong.
And it all started because of Lex's possessive behavior, some meaningless gala Michael had never wanted to go to, and unforeseeable complications from a ridiculous drunken tattoo Michael had gotten after losing a bet against Ted.

"Harley was taken by surprise when she faced the screen. Vigilante had actually paused the movie while they spoke. She didn’t understand why that was so profound, but…it made her feel a little warm and fuzzy. Mister J never did that. Then again, he knew what was best for her – even if it meant missing her favorite movie sometimes."
