“Seema threatened to divorce me last night,” Ray Nadeem admitted, listless in his hospital gown and struggling to breathe from the reddening binds around his midsection. “I tried to hide my bullet wound from her, so that I could feel like everything was okay. But she saw it, then yelled at me for lying and I don’t even blame her. Then she told me she would file.”
“I’m sorry, Ray. That sounds hard. That sounds really hard.”
“Yeah,” Ray laughed before pressing his palms into his eyes. “It is.”
Arms crossed, Poindexter shook his head. “God, I hope it all works out,” he continued, before scratching his face.
“I don’t know what I’ll do without my family. They’re everything to me,” Ray whispered. The branches of the fan twisted in his eyes, offering him the only distraction that turned the unrelenting numbness in his chest into a simple buzz.
“You’ll live, Ray. That’s what you’ll do,” Dex answered with a crisp nod of his head.
