“Gaius,” Merlin started to ask, a bit hesitantly, when he finally reached the tower, late that evening. “What all do you know about faeries?”
Gaius dropped a half-finished potion, turned several fascinating shades of red and pink before moving on to near-purple, and yelled at Merlin for being irreparably foolish for quite a long while before Merlin was able to get a word in edgewise and was allowed to tell him anything more about the afternoon.

Merlin had just enough time to congratulate himself on a job well done after removing a tampered-with goblet of wine from Arthur's chambers, when suddenly things went very wrong

To Merlin’s absolute mortal terror, Uther tilted the cup to his own mouth and drank, looking Merlin straight in the eye all the while, and Merlin tried not to think about how much killing he’d be subjected to, when people worked it out that the King had gotten a poisoned cup from Merlin’s own hands.

Summary
There are three things someone ought to know about King Uther Pendragon:
-the first is that the King has burdened himself with the mission of vanquishing Magic from the lands, for Magic only brings Grief in its wake,
-the second is that Uther has three beautifully head-strong children and that he loves all of them,
-the third is that Merlin, Uther's most cherished child, has Magic.(Not that many people are aware of the last two points...)
