Summary
'It was an accident.'
That is all it was. All it is. After all, accidents aren't inherently bad. Accidents are normal. They happen all the time and, more importantly, no one can be blamed for an accident. It's not his fault. It was an accident. He can't be blamed. It was an accident. It can't hurt him, because it was an accident. Dad and Gaz are gone- but it was an accident.
Accidents are okay. Accidents are inevitable. Accidents are normal and not horrifically life-shattering. He's fine. It's not his fault.
It's not his fault.
It can't be.

Ryland hadn't realized Simon's breathing had grown so heavy.
"Do you know what the three different types of rocks are?" He asks before he can think about the words coming out of his mouth.
"...do I fucking what?"

Summary
An Eridian mining crew find a human welded into a stranded ship on the surface of a moon. They bring him back to Erid, to the only other human they know.
Something in Grace's chest flickered into life. He had buried it so long ago that he hardly knew what it was anymore, and so he took off his glasses and cleaned them on the edge of his cardigan, as if Rocky's words were a smudge he could clear away before finding the will to hope.
“Ah…” his words failed halfway out of his mouth. Rocky chittered at him, a little sound of encouragement. “There’s another human? Here. And… alive?”

Summary
Simon waited.
Waited for them to apologize. Tell him there’s nothing they could do. That he wasn’t worth the trouble or resources, that he wasn’t worth the time.
But that never came.
Instead, after a second Grace came back on the line, his voice sounding determined now. “Alright,” he said. “Hang tight.”
Simon blinked slowly. “What?”

Summary
This was the first time Gaz had really looked death in the face, and no number of R-rated video games could have prepared her for the terror it sent down her stomach. Zim was animated, eccentric, and all-too-similar to the brother snapping his fingers at her face to rouse her from the state of shock she found herself stuck in. Zim wasn’t meant to be so still, so silent, so cold.
This is how Dib would look when he died.
-
Gaz thinks, briefly, about her brother. It’s possible that , at 12 years old, she’s unprepared to face death.
