“Mav, where are you?”
His voice is wrong, is the first thing Maverick notices. It’s pitched too high, too loud, and the sound rips past frayed vocal chords, a throat made raw and broken from surgery and radiation. The use of Maverick’s call sign instead of his name takes longer, and understanding creeps in as he fights past the grogginess of his half-awake state.
“Ice, I’m okay—” Maverick starts, but another shuddering gasp from the phone, raw and painful sounding, cuts off the words.
“Where are you?”
