"Zhongli, xiansheng, babe," Childe said carefully, turning the box over. "Not that I don’t appreciate getting gifts, but why did you just give me six pristine dragon teeth?"

Zhongli, standing across from him with the composed air of a man who did not just hand over a box full of prehistoric murder weapons, sipped his tea. "It is customary."

Childe stared at him. Then at the dragon teeth. Then back at him. "Customary for what?!"

Zhongli placed his teacup down with the grace of an immortal who had far too much patience for his mortal lover’s nonsense. "In ancient Liyuean courtship, the first stage is the Presentation of Worth. One must procure six treasures of great value to offer to their intended. The quality of these treasures reflects the depth of one’s devotion."

In which Zhongli courts Childe the ancient Liyuean way—and Childe suffers.

    Summary

Venti gestures wildly with his cup, sloshing wine everywhere. "Morax, my dearest, densest rock, you have spent this entire conversation ranting about him like a spurned lover while casually dropping information that would make any romantic in Teyvat weep. This is comedy gold. You are besotted. You are smitten. You are—" Venti grins, leaning in— "down bad."

Zhongli, ever the unshakable force of nature, simply raises an eyebrow. "I am not."

"You are. Listen to yourself!" Venti straightens, mimicking Zhongli’s refined voice: "Ah yes, this Harbinger is so frustrating, he constantly buys me things, dotes on me, challenges me in battle, calls me attractive, feeds me with his own two hands, kisses my forehead before running off into the sunset—" Venti breaks off, wheezing. "Oh Archons, how are you this oblivious?"

In which Zhongli rants about his Harbinger boyfriend. Venti is both exasperated and amused.

    Summary

Childe and Zhongli continued to dance around each other, two celestial bodies caught in an orbit of their own making, spinning and spinning, always close, never quite colliding.

    Until—

    Nah.

Despite all evidence to the contrary, despite literally everyone in the city knowing, Childe and Zhongli remained blissfully, painfully, tragically oblivious.

It was starting to become an issue.

In which everyone in Liyue knew they were together, except for them.

Prologue: How to Ruin Your Life with Chopsticks

Tartaglia woke up one morning as a free man. By lunchtime, he was married.

    To Zhongli.

And the worst part? He had no idea.

Somewhere in Liyue, bets were placed, contracts were reviewed, and Xiao was having an existential crisis.

By the time Childe finally found out, it was already too late.

All because of a pair of chopsticks.

And Zhongli? He was just sipping his damn tea.

    Summary

Zhongli is elegant catastrophe incarnate. Graceful like a marble pillar. Heavy like debt. Mysterious like an old man who forgot his wallet again. Which is unfortunate, considering Childe is the one always paying.

“It’s not a date,” Childe says, sliding a bag of mora across the table with the resigned flair of a long-suffering sugar partner. “It’s a diplomatic luncheon.”

“It is two in the morning,” says the waiter.

Zhongli hums, sipping his tea like the moon wrote him into a sonnet. “Luncheon is a flexible term.”

Childe would like to disagree. Instead, he stares at the older man’s collarbone with the expression of someone seeing divinity and planning to sin about it.

    They are definitely not dating.

They are also holding hands under the table.

And someone really should’ve told Zhongli what "low profile" meant before he recited a personalized love poem in the middle of Liyue Harbor during rush hour.

Or, the only discreet thing about their relationship is Zhongli’s belief that it is discreet at all.
