Kazuya is not easily surprised.
He could usually predict what would happen in both his life and on the field. He had always been a very calculating person like that.
But it was simply impossible to predict the unpredictable.
So when Kazuya had first seen Sawamura's face at practice that morning of meeting the Swallows' new recruits, he had been surprised.
"Just... what the hell happened to you in third year?"
or: a pro future fic where miyuki is reunited with sawamura on the same team once more. miyuki has unresolved parental issues and is emotionally constipated. sawamura is financially unstable and deeply in love. this goes about as well as you’d expect.

Summary
The first time that Mumbo experienced an auction was also the first time that he remembered questioning everything that he knew.
Everyone reaches a point in their childhood where they realise that their parents are people who aren’t always right. Usually however, this doesn’t include a shattering realisation that you don’t actually know anything about the world.
The bubble that Mumbo grew up in had black tinted windows that prevented him from seeing anything other than what was right in front of him. And with no reason to suspect otherwise, how was he to know that there was a whole world out there.
Okay, maybe that was a little extreme, but the general point still stood. His entire world view had just collapsed and now, at the grand old age of ten, he was finding out that life wasn’t supposed to be a constant charade.
Unfortunately, Mumbo was not a natural to the art of acting.

Grian studied him for a moment, then asked the question that had been weighing on Mumbo’s mind the entire day. “What will you do after?”
Mumbo hesitated, then shook his head slowly. “I don’t know. Maybe head home, if there’s anything left of it. Or just… figure out what freedom feels like.” He paused, his voice barely a whisper. “If there is such a thing anymore.”
