“Got it.” I still didn’t understand why she wanted to keep me safe, which made me nervous. She’d implied that it wasn’t personal. That she would do the same for anyone in my position. But that didn’t square with how she’d treated me when we first met. That gleeful, know-it-all blackmailer was still there under the surface. I could see her. But something, at some point, had changed.
“Is ‘Lisa’ your real name?” I’m not sure why I said it, but I did.
She cocked her head. “Lisa Wilbourn.” She pronounced it grandly, as if introducing a celebrity. “It’s not my legal name, but it’s what I call myself. Like, in my own head.”
“Oh.”
“I could tell you my birth-name. I know yours.”
“No. I was just curious.”
Lisa Wilbourn looked me up and down, with green eyes like shards of ocean-smoothed glass, and clicked her tongue. “Rest well, Taylor.” She walked away.
