Summary
Dan had been so bone-deep sure that he was going to have to leave Casey that he had, in effect, mentally reconciled himself to the idea. There was something to it, he was pretty sure, and he said so to Abby: something to the idea of reconciliation, something to smoothing over all the hollow, pitted scars in his soul with warm beach sand. He’d bake in the sun until all the regrets had baked out, like alcohol from a rum cake.
“Don’t you mean rum balls?”
“No, I’m pretty sure I mean cake.”

Summary
“What the hell happened?”
“I had a slight run-in with a cab.”
“A slight run-in with a cab.” Harvey frowns, eyes darting from the torn knees of Mike’s pants to his rumpled tie to what Mike can only assume is a pretty bad scrape on his cheek, judging from the stinging and the blood he’s wiped away multiple times in the last fifteen minutes. “It doesn’t look very ‘slight.’”

Summary
Summer in Milwaukee was not about to give up the ghost. The air crackled with heat, static electricity ready at any moment to burst into lightning, and Dana and Casey were sitting outdoors at their favorite burger joint. Casey was two beers in and feeling good. Dana was talking about the Eastern conference finals, because she had never been able to let go of anything in her life, punctuating her points with aggressive jabs of French fries.
“Anyway,” she said, popping a fry into her mouth, “that’s what I said to Dan about it.”
“I’m sure he listened attentively.” Casey tried to hide the smile that was struggling through.
“He’s a good kid.” She took a drink of her soda. “Gets along with everybody. Kind of flighty, though.”

Summary
“I don’t know,” said Kim to Dave, on their side of the booth, “it’s just inevitable, isn’t it?”
“What is?” asked Casey. He had a nice, quiet buzz on; Anthony’s was seasonally appropriate, if a touch juvenile, with black tinsel draped everywhere and a skeleton in a corner behind the bar. Jack must be bumping into it constantly.
“That if you know somebody long enough, sooner or later you’re going to get a crush on them.”
