He wants to defend himself, to say that his silence was due to some misguided effort to be tolerant, not disregard. He wants to dissect her efforts at nothing and measure her virtue against his own. But the always pragmatic part of his mind reminds him that they both thought themselves helpful in their secrecy. Two passive bystanders holding hands in the backseat of a blue coupe. So instead he speaks concisely, “Twice?”

A lot can happen in three hours, Ilyukhina reasons. Especially when the alternative is the extinction of all life on the planet. Maybe Grace sat with himself for a few hours, looked at a picture of his students, had a "come to Jesus" moment as the Americans like to say. Maybe he sat down across from Stratt and said with steady hands "you're right, someone has to do it. And it has to be me."
