His eyes stayed fixed on the page, unfocused, as though he were trying to look through it rather than at it. Once, just once, he lowered the pen and let the tip hover over the paper, his hand trembling ever so slightly with the effort of committing to a word.
Nothing came.
With a quiet exhale that bordered on a sigh, he let the pen drop from his grip. It struck the page softly, then rolled off the notebook and onto the floor, where it came to rest near his foot. He didn’t reach for it.
