“How can he humiliate himself like that? That’s not youth.” Gai let out, defeated and angry, as he stared into the river.
Their usual sparring sometimes ended here, at sundown. The calm of the riverbeds soothing the fresh wounds and bruises they inflicted on each other. It had become a sacred exchange. The river also made words flow, Gai would do most of the speaking and Kakashi the listening. But when Kakashi did speak, it was a display of thoughtful compassion, the kind you only learn after you’ve been deeply hurt.
“Isn’t that how he raised you?” Kakashi pointed, his words as steady as the current before him.
“I don’t think there’s a cooler shinobi out there than your dad.”

A canon divergent re-telling based on unused footage from the original film, George Lucas’s revised fourth draft of the Star Wars screenplay, some issues in the Star Wars: Empire comic series, some Luke Skywalker book I found a while ago about his life on Tatooine before ANH, and miscellaneous fun facts found on Wookiepedia and other websites and media.

Gai spoke at the reception that followed Kakashi's inauguration.
“My eternal rival—it has been one of the premiere joys of my life to watch you transform from the curious, brooding youth whom I admired into the intelligent, powerful and truly kind man who sits before me today, whom I am proud to respect and adore.” He raised his sake cup and it looked comically small in his big hands. “To our Rokudaime.”
Adore. Kakashi turned the word over and over again in his head and tried to remember if Gai had said it before in all his flowery language about friendship. He couldn't.

“I challenge you to kiss me,” he says.
It’s out of his mouth before he can really think about it, which is something he only rarely experiences and only when standing in front of Gai. It’s like his brain shortcuts to places he didn’t even know existed before he came into contact with expressive eyebrows, gleaming eyes and a determined grin.
A grin that slips slowly off Gai’s face now. His eyes grow huge, as if to make up for it. “What.”
