“Oh,” Parrot breathes. “Oh.” He seems surprised, somehow. Surprised that - what? That Theo cares about Parrot's life? That he just said it out loud? “I’m - I don’t want to die.”
“Don’t you?” Theo asks, voice quieter, tired, with a worn-out grain of bitterness.
“No, I don’t,” Parrot says.
“Pinky promise,” Theo insists, sticking out his hand. Dust motes dance in the rays from their window. Parrot laughs a little, then sticks his own hand out and promises. In the sunset, Parrot’s pale hand looks golden.

“There,” the invisible player says from far, far away. He’s dizzy, and tired. “Now you’ll be obedient for the rest of the ride.” Why, though? It doesn’t… it doesn’t matter…
"Wemmbu!" Parrot calls from far away.
What wonders a Weakness 2, Slowness 4, Blindness, and Nausea potion can do, someone says from even farther away.
And then he’s out like a light.

What if Wemmbu never escaped the invisible person's trap?

"Riiiiiight," Flame says, stretching out the inner vowel as long as Lomedy did. He flicks the lever to close the trap and a whirlpool opens beneath him, a yawning chasm waiting to swallow him.

Sixteen-year-old Avery Hastings has a relatively normal life: learning to drive, trying his best not to fail algebra, and helping his best friend Derek Hutchins–the human Vessel of an eldritch entity known as the King in Yellow–stay safe from secret government agents who want to find him after their breakneck escape from the Department of Metaphysical Sciences nearly six months ago. Things get crazy sometimes, but Avery wouldn’t have it any other way.
Behind the scenes, however, new threats are brewing. On New Year's Eve of 2025, Avery has a maybe-fake experience that changes his life. With no way to figure out who Derek is— was— if he was even real, or if they actually saved the world, Avery tries to leave it behind. But he's haunted by what he saw, and what he failed to do, in that Minecraft world as the clock ticked into the New Year.
And then, just as he thinks maybe he can finally move on, Derek finds him. He's alive, and mostly intact, and Avery allows the relief and joy of seeing his friend in real life to overshadow the cracks creeping through Derek's even-keeled facade. As they draw closer, however, Avery finds it harder and harder to ignore— until he realizes that maybe the world isn't as saved as he thought it was.
