It felt odd, admitting it out loud. It almost made him feel vulnerable, a side of him he’d learned to hide from a very young age. Yet here he was, confessing his intentions to an android that not a week earlier had been hell bent on destroying all deviants.

Summary
For most people he brought on stage, it was just a routine. It was mostly just to give the crowd a show, something nice to think about later in their beds. It was easy to go through the motions without his body reacting in ways he didn’t want it to on stage. This man, though, seemed to be an exception. Bucky couldn’t give two shits about the cheers in the audience, he just cared about pleasing the man in front of him.

He heard it ring again, but not just from his own phone. The sound filled the room, and it felt like the heavy beating of his heart quit altogether.
He swiveled on his heels to find a long-haired figure standing behind him, a halo of orange energy illuminating his silhouette.
“Bucky.” Steve breathed, his voice cracking. It was him. It was really him.

She points it out as if he hasn’t noticed.
He almost laughs. Snorts air out his nose, but doesn’t bother to reply. There’d be no way to explain it even if he did. The watch’s face is cracked and the battery died a long time ago, but it would be like losing a limb to take it off. Some days the weight of it is all that keeps him in the world.

Joseph was too young to be having an existential crisis. Did that mean he was too young to be in the business of saving the world? Maybe so, but he certainly wasn’t too young to want to save his own skin, nor too young to be unaware of the pains and pleasures inherent within the body. That didn't stop him from wondering what was left when the body was gone.
