"Sara had managed not to cry all day. The entire service - eulogy, the whole decorated veteran tribute with the bagpipes and the flag, everything. She had been fine. But now, Ava Sharpe walking into the damn garage and looking at Nate like they were friends - of course that did it.
They were friends. They were friends because it had been five years since Sara had been in this city, since she’d properly hung out with any of them, since she knew what was going on in their lives. And apparently, in five years, Nate and Ava had become friends. Nate Heywood (who had once been as good as family), was now closer to Ava Sharpe (who had once been the love of Sara’s life) than he was to Sara."

Ava uses her index to trace a line from the hollow of her throat up to her chin, and makes her raise it slightly. Sara swallows, but doesn't move away. Ava bows her head slightly, and Sara feels her breathe in slowly. Ava's nose brushes against the underline of her jaw and Sara closes her eyes, feels the fear clawing at her heart that this might be it, this might be the last time she gets to be this close to Ava.

Summary
Sara reaches up to tuck some of Ava’s hair behind her ear, and it’s like her fingertips are on fire, because that one touch is spreading heat through her body. Ava’s aware, too aware, of how little space there is between them. Of how Sara is tightening her thighs around Ava’s hips, pressing closer. “We’re gonna figure it out.”
And, of course they are. This is a road bump. Everything is fine.
Everything will be fine, and with that worry momentarily pushed aside, Ava’s mind dissolves completely. She just needs Sara to kiss her again, needs it like air.

“Mhmm,” Ava hums, reaching out a thumb to rub softly against Sara’s temple, her fingers threading through Sara’s hair. Sara's eyes close on automatic, as the gentle touch spreads fireworks underneath her skin. “I love you now, Sara.”
Her hand is cupping Sara’s head, and Sara leans into the touch a little, feels Ava reacting to that as her touch gets a little more purposeful, as she uses the grip she has to manoeuvre Sara’s face back for a kiss.

The night before comes flooding back, as Sara wakes properly and remembers. She's in Ava's bed, in Ava's apartment, with Ava's naked, sleep-warmed body in her arms and that sound is probably Ava's phone. Ava's breathing is still slow and Sara listens as it suddenly catches and she inhales, big and deep. Sara can feel it, wrapped around Ava's back the way she is, and the fact of that is so nice that it makes something warm and gentle bloom in her even through the fog of sleep.

Sara sits up, pushing the sleep out of her brain, smiling. "You changed your mind?" she asks, as Ava materialises.
It only takes a second for Sara to realise that something is wrong, the smile slipping off her face. Ava is swaying, almost stumbling through the portal. When it closes behind her, she collapses against Sara's cabinet, grabbing out for something to hold onto. A trinket almost falls off, wobbling against the edge.
Sara is up in a flash, no longer even half asleep.

Sara turns to Ava as she straps the seatbelt on, and Ava can't help but notice how good she looks.
She shouldn't look this good after five years in prison, but she does.
Maybe she even looks better than before. The lines of her arms are stronger, more defined, and there's a twinkle in her eyes that wasn't there before when she was with Oliver, wasn't there even before he framed her and got her locked up.
Or, Ava picks Sara up from prison and tries to figure out if she's in love with her.

Ava sighs, stops fighting the fingers that Sara is trying to weave between her own. Sara smiles, and settles her chin on Ava’s shoulder, so that she can speak directly into her ear. “Come on, Ava. Loosen up. Let's go home.” Her mouth moves downwards, getting at Ava’s neck, pressing kisses to the smooth skin there.
With her free hand, she pulls the hair tie easily out of Ava’s hair, smoothing it down as it falls down her back, tucking it over Ava’s other shoulder.
