    “Hey sensei,”

The voice is distant, small. Familiar?

“I hope resting really is what you need. I don’t know what to do now. The others want to stay, but I’m…”

His eyes crack open to a blurry mess of a world. Everything swims, and the pain in his head seems to have narrowed, shooting through his eye but deep and back and fuck it hurts to think. Overwhelming nausea follows.

That small voice dissolves into the quiet, choking hiccups of someone trying to hide their tears.

Her hair is bright, bubble gum pink. It hurts to look at. She looks real.

    -

His name is Hatake Kakashi. He is a jounin of Konahagakure no Sato. He doesn’t feel like that’s true. Something is very wrong with him.

He is thirty-five years old, a university student for the second time, hardly attached to his country, let alone his town, and he was a teenager when he last properly watched Naruto. Waking up as the traumatised goofy teacher guy must be some kind of joke.

a blank space, a missing part

“Zanka?” Enjin calls again, “You… you hit your head pretty hard.”

“No shit, with this headache,” Zanka grumbles. He glances up at Zodyl, pulling a face, and carefully wiggles out of his hold, standing on his own two feet. He sways a bit, then says, “Who the hell are you people?”

Interesting. Zodyl’s mind begins spinning, ideas and experiments spilling into his thoughts as Zanka assesses both them and the Cleaners with an unfamiliar gaze.

“Kyouka,” he says then, “What… what’s going on?”

On a joint mission with the Hellguard, Zanka takes a hit to the head. Zodyl sees an opportunity and takes it.

    Summary

1897. Khabarosvk, a town in the Russian Far East. Three suspiciously spy-shaped Japanese men arrive to set up a barbershop; one of them young, eerily quiet, blank-faced and trigger-happy. He's teenage and unwell in a world he doesn't understand, mentored by a man he shouldn't let into his head, but does anyway. One day, he meets someone who reminds him of his mother — she shouldn't, by all means. She does anyway.

1904. China, Lüshun Port — also known as Port Arthur. Ogata is sent on a scouting mission in a pointless, gruesome, largely forgotten war.

    Summary

He told Vasily more about the plot: the obsessed captain dragging his crew to ruin chasing some white-skinned leviathan across the oceans, until only one beast or the other remained.

Although, the book's significance eluded him—what was so radical about a wounded man seeking vengeance? For him, it seemed the most natural thing in the world.

    Until—

Deep into the heart of Siberia, Vasily ran, chased by the ghost that had returned from the underworld and wouldn’t stop it until the end of the world. This time, there’s nothing standing between them, not the wanted criminal, not the gold hunt.

    This time, they’re not alone.

    Summary

Doflamingo’s mouth went dry. Rosi straightened, hands behind his back, as if he were about to start rocking on his heels. He looked exactly the same as when Doflamingo had last seen him. Sweat and dirt-stained, clothes worn, that thumbprint of their father’s blood at the corner of his chin from where Doflamingo had touched him.

Rationally, it couldn't have been real. He still surveyed the islands across the North Blue and kept a tap on the local news, but had long stopped expecting anything. It had been seven years after all. At this point, Rosi was either dead or didn’t want to be found.

“No,” Doflamingo growled, “No, no, you don’t get to do this to me.”

i.e. That one world in ten billion where Doflamingo tries really damn hard. And it's no prettier world by far. A tale of madness, blood and two brothers searching for each other in the dark. [An AU retelling of the Donquixote brothers]
