She wasn’t even fighting back. What a stupid creature. He wondered briefly if it would have been more fun if Annie had made a ruckus, if she had tried to save her pathetic life. It wouldn’t have mattered anyway. Alastor was bigger and stronger- he would have won.
Alastor raised the axe high above his head and brought the weapon down.
Time seemed to slow down as he lowered the axe. At the last second, Annie understood her own mortality. Fear filled her beady little eyes, and she sucked in a terrified breath- like she was trying to scream for help.
Didn't she understand that no one would help her? That it was her destiny to die by Alastor’s hand?
The smile cemented itself on Alastor's face.

“Penelope!” A woman’s voice screamed in the distance. The girl turned her head towards the sound.
So that’s her name, Odysseus thought.
The girl—Penelope—started walking towards the voice. Odysseus watched quietly as she left.

“I have another boy at home,” the wistful king murmured, his words leaving his lips with the burdensome weight of memory. “Much older than you by now… the last I saw him, he wasn’t yet half your size. But he lives very far from here, on another isle across the sea.”
His own eyes stared back at him, unreactive to his words. His son was just an infant, but Odysseus realized that even if he were of rational age, he couldn’t possibly understand what he was saying. The child didn't know what existed beyond the idyllic, gilded shores of Ogygia. He didn't know of smiling people, and kingdoms, and war. The glittering isle had consumed the entirety of his life. Odysseus felt his grip around him tighten.
“You won't die on these shores, boy of mine. I swear it on my life.”

Ash stabbed the shrimp in his younger brother's dish. "You think you're so funny, huh?" He tried to hide the red blush of embarrassment with his glare.
"That was my shrimp! Mom!"
But Mom was staring at them with a weird smile playing on her lips. "You two, don't ever grow up." Michael stole a shrimp from his Dad's plate to which the latter gave no response.
"How can you possibly stop the process of aging?" Ash asked with a mouthful of shrimp.
Jessica pulled his cheek. "Don't worry, you don't have to try."
"Ow," Ash pulled away and nursed his cheek, "you need to stop doing that!"

But it is pitiable, isn't it? To be nineteen and to have gone through so much. Jess would say that Ash has led a more full life than most ever will, but—that's not true, is it? A full life can't be just pain. It can't be this.
