Summary
Tommy leaped up to a fire escape and onto the adjoining roof, shaking more of the mud off his limbs as he did. He landed without sound, perching on the edge of the roof with the fearlessness most reserved for getting into arguments on the Internet, and scampered along the railing until he reached a gap and leaped.
His wings flared out on reflex, but Tommy had no need for them. He fell sixteen feet and landed with a tap of his sneakers on concrete, painless as stepping from sidewalk to street. Drifted across some rooftops, catching a glimpse of Particle Man flitting between buildings as the thermals dragged him up, and headed over to the hiding place where he stashed his backpack.
A winged figure was crouched above it on a heating vent, air fluttering the edges of his dark feathers. Tommy scowled at him, scrambling in to grab his things before the man could get a word in, and Angel said, “Mate, what the fuck did you do to your wings?”

“Working for the side that does it isn’t any better,” the prisoner said evenly, and Phil glared, stepped sharply forward. The Jedi didn’t flinch.

Philza seemed taller in real life. Still blond like Chayanne, scraped-up and wiry with bedraggled wings he held close to his back– dressed like he had been on the island, in the green robes he’d been dropped off in, except now he had scraps of a Federation uniform on, too, and a gas mask slung over his shoulder with a long beak like a bird’s, not the kind Chayanne grew up with for emergencies. Tired eyes, with crow’s feet that tightened when he caught sight of Chayanne in the cell.
Hi, Dad. The words scurried like rats trying to escape a sinking ship, hitting doors they couldn’t squeeze under. He hadn’t had an easy time talking with his voice since he’d come out of the tank, and right now he didn’t even have his pad to scribble on.
Chayanne dipped his head a tiny bit so he seemed polite without compromising his line of sight. He dropped his metal bar with a clang and raised his hands.
