“She’s cold, Joel.” It’s the first thing Tess says about the kid that isn’t practical, isn’t about the job. It’s quiet, too quiet for the kid to hear since she’s wandered a bit away and found herself a spot to sit down, out of the rain still dripping from the roof. “She’s just a fucking little girl and she’s cold.”

He stops trying to argue they should keep moving.

Or: Joel doesn't like Ellie being cold.

He told her once that she was the only editor who didn’t try to wring the wild out of him. She liked that. She would have told him to reuse the phrase in a column if she wasn’t selfish enough to keep it for herself.

Langdon is the star columnist of popular wilderness adventure magazine The Backpacker. Mel is the editor who helps him stay that way.

When Langdon starts blowing through deadlines and stops answering calls, Mel decides the best course of action is to meet him where he's at.

    Summary

“Nothing’s different,” Ellie tries to talk Joel off the ledge the best way she knows how. “Except that fucking…thing. It was different. It was smart. And I just thought…What if, ya know?”

Joel’s right in front of her. He sinks to his knees, which is honestly for the best before he passes out and knocks his head against the hardwood floors. “What are you asking me here, kiddo?”

The nickname tugs at years old memories, tussles with months old anger. Settles in her hours old desire to be held by him again. The desire she’s brushing off and shoving down. Even if she is going to die, it doesn’t mean Joel gets to be off the hook. All it means is that he’d ruined everything all so she could die in the name of fucking nothing in Jackson Hole, Wyoming instead.

Ellie squares her shoulders as she tilts up her chin. She holds him hostage with her gaze and implores him with the earnesty of her expression. “I need you to wait with me to see if I turn. And if I do,” she pauses, swallows, wishes she could look anywhere besides right into his eyes, “I need you to put a bullet in my head.”

This just makes her think of what Riley told her, about how her parents would hang her artwork in their home like it was something worth looking at, something worth saving.

Ellie wonders, just for a moment, if Joel would do that with her artwork.

Glancing down at what she’s created, a gruesome sketch of herself as half-girl and half-Cordyceps monster, she decides probably not. No one wanted artwork that ugly. Just like no one wanted a kid this ugly.

“You know they say his daddy was murdered,” she continued, careless of the way her voice carried across the street. “They burned him up, didn’t bury him, just tossed his ashes out onto the wind like he was part of the storm. We’re probably breathing him in right now. You think he’s in Heaven?”
Adam felt his knuckles tighten around the handle of the broom. He lifted his eyes to hers and demanded, “What?”
“Niall Lynch,” she said. “You think God wanted him back? After he’d been murdered and then burned up and all? If I was God, I don’t think I’d know what to make of a man like that if he started knockin’ at the pearly gates.”

or: it's 1933. adam can't remember the last time it rained.
