Summary
Sharp intakes of breath shake Oksana’s shoulders as Eve moves over the tender, ruined skin at her hip and lower abdomen.
“I’m sorry, baby. I know it hurts.” Eve soothes. That word - baby - how strange it is, coming from her own mouth. She’s fairly certain she’s never called anyone this before. And now she assigns it to a killer. A brutal, beautiful, monstrous thing.
A small sound from Oksana’s mouth in answer. A sorry tilt to her mouth. A whispered question, “Can you say it again?”
So Eve does, “Sorry, baby.” She brushes a lock of Oksana’s hair aside, brings her lips to the woman’s temple. An inhale from Oksana drags in her throat and becomes something else.
A monster. Its definition: A fleetingly soft, unraveling woman with a lost child crouched, unhealed, inside.

She’s meant to start working tomorrow and she hasn’t even met the executive chef yet, outside of traded emails where she was swayed by the promise of full autonomy into leaving her position as pastry chef at one of the only restaurants in the city with three Michelin stars for a fledgling fusion tapas joint sandwiched between a pierogi stand and a vape shop on the lower east side that got an upstart Michelin star in its first year of operation.
