“Stay, if that’s what you want,” Mydei says after a long moment. His expression is carefully schooled to neutrality, but he feels heat rush to his face. Notes of clove and spice seep into Mydei’s scent, as if warm from ceremonial offerings before the furnace of battle, the air thrumming with anticipation. He refuses to look away from Phainon’s stunned expression and hears Phainon’s quick intake of breath at his words. Mydei’s mouth is dry when he speaks again. “Just … be certain.”
“I am.” That conviction is back, and the way Phainon says it is like he has never been more certain of anything before. And indeed, Mydei barely ever heard him answer so quickly and with such decisiveness. There is also a rawness in Phainon’s voice, as if he is afraid the moment will slip through his fingers. As if he has to reach out and grasp at it before it and Mydei disappear from his sight. “Please, Mydei.”
