I’d just as soon send you back over the water and let you go, but the ferryman is at the prayer-meeting and so’s anybody else I’d trust to mind you. So until we decide what to do with you, you’re going to have to await judgment somewhere safe.”
“What? You’re throwing me in jail?”
“You did come here to kill Brother Faulkner,” Carpenter says mildly. “So there’s no use in getting all indignant. And anyway, this is an abbey of two hundred people. We don’t have a jail. What we do have is an old root cellar that bolts from the outside. We throw the drunks in there if they go overboard on the rice wine at a feast. It’s not as bad as it sounds.”
