Summary
Even gods get attached, and Carbuncle is a god of childhood, of hopes and dreams. In all worlds his beloved King of Light fell, despite his meddling. The King, his retainers, they all died in the end. In one last hopeful effort, it goes back to the start, plucking cords and strings until it finds one. A single one, where the mother of the king passes just a second later, her eyes locked onto her wailing babe even as the light faded from them.
It is there the god meddles, and there the god hopes, whispering its dreams and wishes into the dying queen’s ear and it is there that Aulea wakes with a gasp, rocketing upwards, blood cooling between her legs and down her thighs.

“So. You’re the one they call ‘Rook’.” It wasn’t a question, just a statement of fact, but Elan nodded anyway–noting the shift from casual to business. If his spine straightened in response, no one could blame him.
“Some call me that.” The smile on his face didn’t waver, for all his leg jittered beneath the table with excess energy. If the Inquisitor noticed it, she said nothing. “So. I heard you’re in need of some help?” Not quite a lie–Tarquin may not have told him the details of who he was meeting, but he had mentioned it would be for a job.
Lavellan’s smile thinned, and she tapped idly at the rim of her mug. “That is one way to say it, yes. I’m sure you’ve been briefed on the mage called Solas.” Elan nodded without prompting. Bald, elf–and a very tall one at that–also apparently the Inquisitor’s lover at one point though rumors were murky on that one. “Good. He is an Elven apostate. We’re tracking him. All our information points here, to Tevinter. You’ve come highly recommended by multiple parties.”

For years Bilbo has written about his adventures and told stories about his dealings with dwarves and dragons. To most it seemed like fanciful nonsense but to Bilbo it was all very real. A weight followed him home from his travels, one called regret. Now in his final moments Bilbo has a choice to make – go quietly into death’s embrace or go back again and face all the fear and pain for the chance to make things right?
Of course, change is a fickle thing and not everything can be done again as Bilbo is about to find out. In the end, it may not only be salvation that he’s fighting for.
