Viktor felt grateful that no one had said his name in weeks. It felt stupid now, like a joke was being played on him.
His mother had chosen it—Viktor, "the winner,"—when he was born purple and gasping, his spine already warping, shifting his little pelvis and crooking his thin leg inwards. My champion, his father told him she whispered, pressing her cracked lips to his forehead. Her little miracle.
Now, hunched over a knife and a half-rotten potato, he wondered if he had instead been a curse.

He listened for his mother in the kitchen, heating water on the stove to pour into the bath in order to keep it warm for him. He’s not sure that he would feel it anyway; his skin had been as numb as his mind for months now, but he didn’t protest. Didn’t say much of anything since he got here. Since he collapsed outside his mother’s apartment, crying feebly on her doorstep because he felt too weak to reach up and knock. She found him still, alerted by the thud of his hammer slipping from his grip, tugged him inside, pressed kisses all over his disgusting face and matted hair, and led him to the bathroom.

It had been two days now, and Shiro was still asleep. Keith checked that he was just asleep every couple of minutes, a thick and calloused finger searching for a pulse. It was weak. Slow. But he found it every time.
The room Keith had boarded up for them in the dilapidated hospital probably wasn’t the best choice for a hideout, but it really was a last ditch effort to keep his brother alive.

Summary
Keith and Lance's lives after the war, told from the past and the present. Presently, Keith and Lance are married and are professors at Michigan State University. Their lives have taken a gentle lull since war's end, but after an incident on a humanitarian mission leaves Lance shaken, old fears come creeping back that disrupt the peace they have so earnestly and carefully crafted together.
In the past, Lance is trying to reckon with what the war has done to him. Despite freeing the universe, Lance is left feeling empty and muddled with fears he never thought he would have to deal with. Amid trying to adjust to feeling like his life is turning completely upside down, he finds Keith in the center of it all. And something unexpectedly beautiful happens at a time where he scarcely could find anything to call beautiful.

“What’ve you been doing, then?” Lance asks as he starts collecting his things to put away. “If your phone’s been dead.”
“Foldin’ stuff,” Keith replies absent-mindedly, tongue peeking out of his mouth as he does, indeed, fold some papers. Lance finally gets all his stuff packed away and then turns his full attention to Keith, humming curiously. Keith, like with everything artsy, is amazing at origami, and Lance is always amazed at how he takes a piece of scrap paper and makes a mini-sculpture.
“Like what?”
“Made you this bouquet,” Keith says.
