Ilya didn’t think when the ball dropped back in January that 2017 would be a year of firsts. He was well established in Boston with a team he was hell bent on taking through the playoffs. He had friends he liked well enough and a home he enjoyed. With Shane Hollander dating Rose Landry it seemed like he would be relegated to months of picking up women at bars. Did it matter that those women would probably have dark hair and freckles?

Then the All Star Game happened. Shane showed up in his stylist’s picked clothes and a new confidence he never expected. He forced them to talk about feelings and held him while he cried about Russia and his family. He hadn’t let himself cry like that in years, let alone have someone witness that type of breakdown.
He hadn’t felt comfortable in someone’s arms like that since his mother died.
After that the firsts kept coming.

Summary
The New York Admirals have just won a game in Montreal against the Metros. A game that should have been an easy win for Montreal, except Scott Hunter has been watching the cracks in the team's usual flow deepen throughout the night. Something was wrong with Hollander, and he had a suspicion it had something to do with the rumors he had come out as gay, and his teammates didn't approve.
Scott knew what that felt like. Knew no one else in the league had ever come out before, except him. Which is why, with a loving nudge from Kip, he finds himself on Hollander's doorstep, ready to give him a pep talk, or a pat on the back, or maybe some unsolicited advice.
Until Ilya Rozanov answers the door, that is.

Ilya laughs. “Unless you give me reason not to, Hollander.”
“That’s pretty weak.”
“Just like your backhand.”
“Oh fuck off.”
Ilya shakes his head, tutting. “Not good enough, Hollander, sorry. Want to try again?”
Shane huffs. “Don’t have time, gonna be busy kicking your ass.”
Ilya glances at the warm up timer, realizing belatedly that they actually only have a few more minutes. “Alright, fine. I will be expecting better during the game!”
“Expect whatever you want, Rozanov.” Shane pauses. “Except for winning. You’re not getting that.”
“Ooh, good one! Keep ‘em coming!”

“Yes. Promise.”
“And you’ll call tonight?” Shane’s throat works over the words, like he still doesn’t trust this new thing between them. Ilya thinks he understands. He also doesn’t know how to trust this love. How can he when it has been trapped in his own heart so long. Neither of them know what the next year will bring. There is so much time before Ilya can have his agent, or his future agent, he will need a new one with no connections to Russia, reach out to Ottawa and hope that they’ll be interested in a future Hall of Fame center. The one thing Ilya is certain of is that he will do everything in his power to make their plan work. He spent his entire adult life lusting after, and then pining for Shane with his whole heart.
“I will call.” Ilya reaches for the hand Shane has left on the gearshift and threads his fingers through his. He wants to say so much, but he has always been better with touch than words, especially when the only shared language was English. “We will talk every day.”
Or, There is a year before Ilya can sign with Ottawa, Shane counts down the days until their forever.
