The sidewalk bit into Niall's thrashing body like teeth. Every deep breath sat cold and dry in his lungs, every muscle drawn painfully taut beneath Ruben. Their limbs tangled frantically as they fought to overpower each other.
They writhed on the ground together like a dance without music, its disjointed rhythm bordering on intimacy in spite of itself.

Christ, Niall smelled like a fucking virgin.
Really, he smelled like the dirt from the neighbor’s yard, and the hot metal of a burning wreck, and the same acrid chemical shit they used in the clink infirmary to patch up all the pansies who’d gotten what was coming to them. But beneath all that, beneath the stench of the world’s shit? He smelled like a fucking baby.
Like 72 bleeding virgins awaiting him in Heaven, or whatever bullshit people promised themselves just to make it through the day.
