Sonya had a stronger connection to his mind, while Rodion had always been more connected to her body. It wasn’t freedom—no such thing as freedom in this world—but it was theirs. When Figaro initiate a kiss, he’d first kiss the side of Faust’s lips, or perhaps his cheek, smiling all the while. It’s an oddly hesitant kind of thing, half a foot through the door. Always asking for something, permission or forgiveness, Faust couldn’t be sure. It reminded Faust of the way a cheeky cat would nudge against him when begging for food.
When Faust returns the kiss, deep and full of desperation, it’d always taste bitter like grief.
