Summary
Luke cuddles close to him. He pulls Solana into his arms, for a change. She coos and melts into him. He wonders if it was a moral failing, taking so much time off after she was born. He wonders if he should have been at the rink the weekend after, like Zach had requested. Post-partum and a lame hip can be ignored to score some goals, right?
“Do you think I’m weak?” Luke purposefully asks the question now, because he knows Beau cannot respond.
He watches as Beau’s eyes grow sad, though, as Beau stares at him, wishing Luke could see himself the way Beau sees him, so different from his reflection in Beau’s glassy pupils.
“You’re strong,” Beau whispers to him. “Stronger than I am.”
Or, Luke knows how to fix things. He can leave the sport he loathes. He can repair his relationship with the man he loves. He has everything he needs to be better.
He sabotages himself instead.

Summary
It’s a reminder that time is moving all too fast. He and Luke were swimming in the ocean in Cancún, then he blinked, and his partner is five months pregnant and nipping his tongue with shaved down, missing bottom teeth. Beau is afraid he will blink again and his daughter will be a teenager, and Luke will have all but forgotten him, because he’s off playing for his tenth, eleventh, twelfth NHL team and family life is nothing but a long shadow that haunts him.
Luke asks to go to sleep. He says his lower back is hurting, and she’s moving too much, and his temples are throbbing. Beau lets Luke back into their bedroom and closes the balcony doors behind him.
Luke is slipping through his fingers, and there’s nothing he can do about it.
Or, Luke and Beau spend the summer together before Solana is born. They both spend the summer in love with each other, and missing the family they should become, knowing they will go long-distance that winter.

“Can I keep this?” Luke asks, standing in the middle of their closet, clothes piled around his feet. Suits and pairs of shoes and underwear and blue jeans and flannels.
“Hm?” Beau sits on the carpet, his hands in his lap, watching Luke pack his clothes for him. Luke volunteered, and Beau thought to let him. Anything to distract Luke from what was bound to happen to the two of them. Beau’s flight in six hours, sending him across the country. No days off or games against each other for the rest of the season, for over two months.
“I want to sleep in it,” Luke folds the t-shirt over his forearm. “Because I will miss you.”
Or, Luke struggles through his tenure as captain of the Nashville Predators. Anthony Beauvillier joins the team for the second time as a veteran presence to help. To hide the relationship they immediately start, they devise the perfect plan: stage fights behind the net, talk shit in interviews, refuse to sit together in the locker room. No one suspects a thing, until Luke finds out he’s pregnant over bye week, and Beau is traded that next morning.

Miika spent a lot of time wondering who Kaia would grow up to be. Maybe a painter, or she would play field hockey professionally. Maybe she would study art history in college, if she decided to go. Kaia still has the chance to be all of those things, but they will be ten times harder. There is another barrier that was not there before. Grief.
Or, Kaia grows up. All of the kids grow up. And they lose part of themselves, and their father, in the process.

Summary
Mati moves his thumb from her lips and tucks a strand of hair behind her ear. He kisses her crown once more. Mati places two fingers against his wrist, a pressure point to help his racing heart slow down, then takes a deep breath. “How long have you known?”
“This morning,” Bella plays with one of her bracelets. Mati reaches to stop her from fidgeting.
Mati swallows. Bella feels it.
Mati plays back the memory, that weekend in Las Vegas. Sweat against sweat, his body against Bella’s body, unwillingly ignorant.
Bella rotates the rings on her fingers. The silver band on her thumb is turning bronze, changing from the salt air around them. “I know that I’m young, and that I have a future ahead of me, but, I think that I want this. I want this, especially with you. Maybe that’s the wrong decision, but it’s the one I’m making.”
Mati swings his legs around, placing his feet on the cobbled sidewalk. "I’m sorry. I’m very, very sorry that I’ve done this to you.”Or, Bella, Mati and Miika come of age. Some growing pains hurt worse than others.

Juuse thinks about his first Christmas with kids. It was only him and Kaarina. Roman didn’t show up, and Juuse didn’t ask for anyone else to come over. Kaarina was six months old, and Juuse gave Kaarina her first taste of food. He fed her the same fish soup that she lazily sips tonight.
His family has grown since then. He has three more children. There should be one more child at the table, a boy who resembles Kaia, nibbling on a dinner roll. Juuse has learned to live with losing him. He loves the children that sit with him that much more. And he loves Pekka, who has always been there, who has never once doubted him, who believes he is strong and deserving of love and capable of achieving just about anything. His husband of ten years. His husband of ten winters.

It’s tough advice, but Juuse takes no offense to it. It’s not Luke, his twenty-seven-year-old fraternity brother friend speaking to him, talking down against him. It’s his best friend who is also a parent, who has been in his shoes, who knows how he’s feeling, and knows how lucky that he is. Luke is smart enough, and, in some ways, kind enough to let Juuse know that luck doesn’t happen to just anyone. It won’t happen to Juuse.
Juuse anchors himself to reality and learns to live within it, and Luke realizes that he's stronger than he knows.
Or, Luke and Juuse play in the 2030 Winter Olympics. Juuse fights back against grief, and Luke can't fight back against real love.

He watches as Juuse swallows. And as Juuse shifts in the tub, circling around to lay against Pekka’s chest, brushing their legs together, laughing that Pekka can’t grow hair on his thighs. Juuse doesn’t want to talk anymore, he only wants what Pekka tells him he deserves. Love.
Juuse trains for the 2029 IIHF World Championships, marking his return from retirement after five years away from the game. And he learns to stay proud of himself, even when his body no longer feels like his own.

Summary
There is a quality within Juuse which Pekka cannot quite place. He doesn’t really believe in God, but, sometimes, that is where he throws the blame – that some other force, outside of this world, created Juuse specifically for him. Pekka understands the idea of being lovesick. Juuse has his stomach in knots, his throat restricted, his body running cold, as he does nothing but lay in bed. Pekka will never be able to love anyone else the way that he loves him.
Juuse’s nostrils dilate as he breathes in. His eyes close again. He pulls their son closer to his chest. Pekka spent his entire life waiting for this. He didn’t know what he was waiting for, until it happened, until Juuse existed beside him.
Juuse moves home and he takes Pekka with him. And there is nothing that can hurt them.
(Except for trauma, and remembrance, and Luke as their house guest.)

Roman couldn’t live with the guilt anymore. He couldn’t live with the fact that when he found out Juuse was pregnant, that the first words that came out of his mouth were “I can’t do this.” He couldn’t get past the way that Juuse ignored him for months, how it took breaking three ribs to get Juuse’s attention. Even then, Roman knew he didn’t deserve him. He was hung up on how, even when they reconciled, if he could even call it a reconciliation, that Juuse was still cold to him. How Juuse could curl in his lap and laugh and initiate sex and love Roman, but still know that Roman wasn’t all there.
Or; Juuse and Roman have a daughter and they think this can fix their relationship. Nothing can fix their relationship, unless Roman works on himself. Part of working on himself means that he needs to leave Juuse alone. Because Juuse deserves better.
