Summary
He looked so young, lying there, exposed; so innocent, so vulnerable. He didn’t look like the junkie kid who had fled home the day he’d turned eighteen, who pumped himself full of poison to drown out the sounds of the screams of the dead and damned. He just looked like a young man who was in pain, and suffering, and hurt.
And that hurt. In and of itself.
(By chance, Diego manages to save Klaus from something awful, and takes care of him for as long as his brother allows him to do so.)

Marija drops down beside him and leans her wiry arms over the ropes, panting. "Good fight," she puffs. "Gotcha good, huh?"
Yeah, he's going to be black and blue tomorrow. "Sure did. Got you back, though." He nods at the way her cheek is already beginning to swell.
"Yeah, yeah. You okay, though—for reals? Broken rib?"
He pokes gingerly at his left side, but he's had enough of those to know the difference. "Nah. Just a bruise."

Summary
Diego had been holding the little package so tightly that his sweaty palms had made the newspaper a little damp. He opened his bedroom door, pausing so that it didn't squeak. He surveyed the corridor. He'd had the lights off in his room and his eyes had adjusted to the darkness. Once he was sure that nobody was nearby, he crept out of his room and down the hall.
He opened Klaus' bedroom door slowly, carefully. Klaus' door didn't squeak.
Klaus was curled up in his bed, facing away from the door. The lamp beside his bed was still lit, although it was on its dullest setting.

Five times Klaus and Diego celebrate Christmas alone, and one time they don't.

Summary
Diego is an amazing police officer, but his coworkers know almost nothing else about him. As each of them stumbles on his relationship with Klaus, they're just relieved Diego has someone looking out for him at home. And with how much happier Klaus makes Diego, none of them think to question the exact nature of their relationship.
