After the reunion they shall not talk about (there were some ugly tears, some heart grabs (not throws) a lot of liquor) they stuck together more or less, for varying reasons, Damon prominently ran off because he missed his brother among other things. Sometimes he didn't even meet him, just watched and left.
"Bingo" Damon whispered pulling Elijah out of his spiral.
"Lo and behold" Elijah replied with a smile. There it was... the dagger.
"We can get out of this place now" Enzo added, "seeing as how there aren't many left here who can actually plunge the dagger in him."
Poor joke aside, things were finally brightening.
Then Damon's phone rang.

Summary
An AU through season 7 of The Vampire Diaries. Rayna traps Stefan in Hellstone. Mary Loise and Nora destroy it, making it technically impossible for Stefan to be saved. Damon however is not about to backdown. He only has Enzo and Valerie to call for help.
Things are dire in the mystic falls gang though, if one could call the motley crew that. Alaric now a widower of a wife who died with his babies, Tyler a revived heartbroken werewolf, Matt a distraught deputy and Jeremy an orphaned Hunter are the only ones to still remain in mystic falls and their sentiment towards the things that go bump in the night, specifically the Vampires has turned for worse.
It all hangs in more careful and strained balance. However things change when something unexpected happens after Damon revives Stefan.
Hints of Steroline, Delena, Bamon, Belvafore and Denzo among other things.
No OCs yayyy

“Damon.", he finally began, his voice barely above a whisper. There was something in his mouth that felt foreign when he spoke, his teeth scraping uncomfortably against his lips. "I... I don't know how to explain it, but something... something has changed within me. I can't be in sunlight. It burns."
If Stefan had been more in tune with his newfound hearing, he would have noticed that Damon’s heart was speeding up at this revelation. “What do you mean?”, he asked with a dreading expression on his face.
“The sun hurt me.” He shakily lifted his palm that was painted with dried blood. “The wood hurt me. But then everything went away, the wounds, but Damon I-“ His hand reached out to Damon, grasping his arm. “What is happening to me?”
His brother looked at him in a way that made Stefan’s chest ache. He had only ever seen this expression once, had only ever worn it once too - eight years ago, on a sunny day.
It was grief.
(Damon, reckless and impulsive, wakes up as the new king. Stefan, kind and sensitive, wakes up as a bloodthirsty vampire. No one said that everything was fair in the Salvatore kingdom.)
