She pushed her fingers down.
The rib shifted.
The thing about telling one very big lie is that it requires a foundation of hundreds of smaller lies to hold it up, lies such as "I'm fine," and "nothing's broken," and "it doesn't hurt."

Vi wasn’t sure how long it had been. Was it weeks? Months? She was pretty sure a year hadn’t elapsed, but perhaps that was just wishful thinking. She had marked the days with tallies on the walls for the first while of her involuntary stay, but she had given up not long after. Staring at the tallies was almost more depressing than sitting in the cell altogether.

While her sentience would live on, her death marked an irrefutable fact about Great Ones. Their flesh was not holy.

Kos's orphan finds a bitter, unwelcome understanding in Maria's regret and slow-simmering fury, for they've both lost parent and life alike to the bloodlust of men.
(The custodian of the dream and guardian of the nightmare are inextricably bound in grief. Yet, as often they see the other's haunting face, their counterpart remains as incomprehensible to them as the Old Ones themselves.)

In the mythos of Bloodborne, a classic gothic horror video game from Fromsoft released in 2015, few things are ever outlined explicitly in the text. Playing this game while trying to piece together the story felt rather like an exercise in literary analysis - which should come as no surprise, given how heavily the game draws from Lovecraftian horror and other classic touchstones. This is why I believe it is so crucial to understand the literary, historical, and cultural context Bloodborne exists in to get a full appreciation for and understanding of the story. However, these theorycrafting discussions at times seem to neglect that key aspect. The purpose of this essay is to recontextualize Bloodborne’s story as it relates to the mysterious character of the Doll. I will be drawing on classical literature, the historical context the game references, as well as the modern context that Bloodborne was released into.
